UK Student Loan Calculator: calculate your monthly repayment
The UK student loan system works by automatically deducting a percentage of your salary when you exceed your plan's threshold. Plan 1 (pre-2012) has a threshold of £22,015, Plan 2 (post-2012) £27,295, Plan 4 (Scotland) £27,660, Plan 5 (post-2023) £25,000, and the Postgraduate Plan £21,000.
The deduction rate is 9% on income above the threshold for all plans except Postgraduate, which is 6%. If you have multiple loans (e.g., undergraduate and postgraduate), both are deducted simultaneously but independently, each on its own threshold.
Loans are automatically written off after a certain period: 25 years for Plan 1, 30 years for Plan 2 and 40 years for Plan 5 (counted from the first April after graduation). Interest varies by plan and your income.
Frequently asked questions
How is the UK student loan repayment calculated?
You pay 9% of your salary above your plan's threshold. For example, on Plan 2 the threshold is £27,295: if you earn £30,000, you pay 9% on £2,705 = £243.45 per year.
What is the difference between loan plans?
Plan 1 is for pre-2012 loans (threshold £22,015), Plan 2 for post-2012 (£27,295), Plan 4 for Scotland (£27,660), Plan 5 for post-2023 (£25,000). The Postgrad plan has a £21,000 threshold and 6% rate.
Can you have more than one active loan plan?
Yes. If you have both an undergraduate and postgraduate loan, you repay both simultaneously. Deductions are calculated independently on each threshold.
When is the student loan written off?
Plan 1 is written off at age 65 or 25 years after becoming eligible. Plan 2 is written off 30 years after the first April following graduation. Plan 5 is written off after 40 years.
