UK PAYE Tax Calculator: understand your take-home pay
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the system used by HMRC to collect Income Tax and National Insurance contributions directly from your salary before you receive it. Your employer deducts the correct amount each pay period based on your tax code, which reflects your Personal Allowance and any adjustments. For the 2025/26 tax year, the standard Personal Allowance is £12,570, meaning you pay no Income Tax on the first £12,570 you earn. However, this allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000, disappearing entirely at £125,140.
National Insurance (NI) is a separate contribution that funds the State Pension and other benefits. Employee NI contributions for 2025/26 are charged at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on anything above £50,270. Unlike Income Tax, NI does not have a personal allowance reduction for high earners, making it relatively straightforward to calculate. Pension contributions made through salary sacrifice reduce your taxable income, providing tax relief at your marginal rate.
Student loan repayments are also deducted through PAYE if you earn above the repayment threshold for your plan. Plan 1 (pre-September 2012 in England/Wales, or Northern Ireland) starts at £22,015, Plan 2 (post-September 2012 England/Wales) at £27,295, Plan 4 (Scotland) at £27,660, and the newer Plan 5 (from 2023) at £25,000. All plans charge 9% on earnings above the threshold. These repayments are not tax-deductible.
