The 12 zodiac signs
The Western zodiac is an astrological system based on the Sun's position relative to the constellations at the time of your birth. It is divided into 12 signs, each spanning approximately 30 days of the year. This system has its roots in Babylonian astronomy and was refined by the Greeks over 2,000 years ago.
The 12 signs are grouped into four fundamental elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Fire signs are characterized by their energy and passion, Earth signs by their practicality and stability, Air signs by their intellect and sociability, and Water signs by their emotional depth and intuition.
In addition to elements, signs are classified by modality: cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) who are initiators, fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) who are persevering, and mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) who are adaptable. Each sign also has a ruling planet that reinforces its distinctive qualities.
Frequently asked questions
Does my sign change with age?
No. Your zodiac sign is determined by your date of birth and remains the same throughout your life. What may vary are the planetary transits that affect your sign at different times, but your sun sign is fixed.
What are the elements?
The four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, and Water) group signs according to shared characteristics. Fire represents energy and action, Earth symbolizes stability and pragmatism, Air is associated with communication and ideas, and Water with emotions and intuition.
Is there a 13th sign (Ophiuchus)?
Ophiuchus is a real astronomical constellation, but it is not part of the traditional astrological zodiac. Western astrology uses a 12-sign system based on seasons, not on the current constellations, so Ophiuchus does not affect your sign.
Is my sign only the sun sign?
The sun sign is the most well-known, but your complete birth chart also includes the moon sign (emotions), the ascendant (how others perceive you), and the position of all planets. For a more complete profile, it is recommended to know your exact time and place of birth.
