A passphrase is a sequence of random words that functions as a password. Unlike traditional passwords full of hard-to-remember symbols and numbers, passphrases combine high security with ease of memorization. This concept was popularized by the xkcd comic "correct horse battery staple".
A passphrase's security is based on the number of words and the size of the dictionary from which they are selected. Each word adds approximately 7.6 bits of entropy. A 4-word phrase reaches about 30 bits, sufficient for many uses.
