Spain payroll calculator: calculate your net salary

Net salary in Spain is calculated by deducting Social Security contributions (common contingencies 6.35%, unemployment 1.55%, and professional training 0.10%) and IRPF (Personal Income Tax) withholding from gross salary.

IRPF is a progressive tax with brackets ranging from 19% to 47% at the state level, plus the regional component that varies by autonomous community. Monthly withholding is an estimate applied by your employer based on your personal situation.

In Spain, salary can be received in 12 or 14 payments. With 14 payments, you receive 12 monthly payslips plus two extra payments (June and December). With 12, the extras are prorated monthly. Annual gross salary is identical in both cases.

Frequently asked questions

What is IRPF and how is it calculated?

IRPF (Personal Income Tax) is a progressive tax in Spain. Your employer withholds a monthly percentage of your gross salary as a tax advance. The rate depends on your salary, personal situation, and autonomous community.

What are the worker's Social Security contributions in Spain?

Workers pay 6.35% for common contingencies, 1.55% for unemployment (permanent contract), and 0.10% for professional training. Total is approximately 6.35% + 1.55% + 0.10% = 8% of gross salary.

What is the difference between 12 and 14 payments?

With 14 payments you receive 12 monthly payslips plus 2 extra payments (June and December). With 12 payments, the extras are prorated into each monthly payslip. The annual gross salary is the same.

Does net salary vary by autonomous community?

Yes. Each autonomous community can set different regional IRPF brackets and rates. For example, Madrid has lower rates than Catalonia, meaning higher net salary in Madrid for the same gross salary.
