Aspect ratio calculator for video, image, and design

The aspect ratio is the proportion between width and height. A 1:1 ratio produces a square, 16:9 a landscape rectangle typical of HD screens, and 9:16 a vertical rectangle like Instagram Stories.

Knowing and maintaining the correct aspect ratio is crucial in web design, video production, photography, and social media. Each platform has preferred dimensions.

Our calculator determines the aspect ratio from any dimensions, simplifying to the greatest common divisor. It allows locking a ratio and calculating corresponding dimensions. Presets include the most commonly used ratios.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most commonly used aspect ratio?

16:9 is the most widely used aspect ratio today. It is the standard for HD TVs, monitors, YouTube, and most video content. It corresponds to resolutions like 1920x1080 (Full HD) and 3840x2160 (4K).

What aspect ratio should I use for Instagram?

Instagram supports several: 1:1 (1080x1080) for square posts, 4:5 (1080x1350) for vertical photos in the feed, and 9:16 (1080x1920) for Stories and Reels. The 4:5 ratio takes up more space in the feed, which generates more interaction.

How is the aspect ratio calculated?

Both the width and height are divided by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, for 1920x1080: the GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120, so 1920/120 = 16 and 1080/120 = 9, resulting in a 16:9 ratio.
