Tipping culture around the world

Tipping is a practice that varies enormously by country and culture. In the United States, a 15-20% tip is practically mandatory as servers depend on it as a fundamental part of their salary. In many countries, tipping is customary but generally voluntary, ranging between 10% and 15%. In Europe, many countries include service in the bill.

When splitting the bill among several people, our calculator facilitates equitable calculation including the tip. A useful tip: when the service has been exceptional, consider giving a little more than the standard percentage. And remember that in some Asian countries like Japan, tipping can be considered offensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is tipping mandatory?

It depends on the country. In the United States, tipping 15-20% is customary and expected. In many European countries, a service charge is included in the bill. In Japan, tipping is not customary and can even be considered rude. Always research local customs when visiting a new country.

What is the standard tip amount?

It depends on the country: in the US it's 15-20%, in Canada 15-20%, in the UK 10-15% (optional), in Australia not expected, and in Japan 0%. As a general rule, if you're in a country you don't know, research local customs or ask the hotel staff.

Is the tip included in the bill?

It varies by country and establishment. In some European countries, the service charge is often included. In the US, it is almost never included. Check your bill: if you see "service" or "service charge", the tip is already included and any additional amount is extra.
