Roll any virtual die with the NexTools dice roller.

How to use the NexTools dice roller

The NexTools dice roller:

Step 1: Select die type (D4-D100).

Step 2: Choose how many to roll (1-10).

Step 3: Click "Roll" or press Space.

Step 4: See animated result. History shows previous rolls.

Digital random generation — fairer than physical dice with no manufacturing imperfections.

Dice probabilities: understanding the math

D6: 1/6 = 16.67% per face. Average: 3.5.

D20: 1/20 = 5% per face. Natural 20 (crit): 5%.

2D6: Not uniform. 7 is most common (16.67%). 2 and 12 are rarest (2.78%). That's why Catan's 6 and 8 hexes are most valuable.

3D6: Bell curve (10-11 most common). Used for D&D classic stats (average 10.5).

Calculate exact probabilities with the NexTools percentage calculator.

Dice in D&D 5e: when to roll what

Attack: D20 + modifier vs enemy AC. Nat 20 = critical (double damage dice). Nat 1 = critical miss.

Damage: Depends on weapon. Dagger: 1D4. Longsword: 1D8. Greataxe: 1D12. Fireball: 8D6.

Saving throw: D20 + modifier vs DC.

Skill check: D20 + modifier vs DM's DC.

HP on level up: Roll your class die. Fighter: D10. Wizard: D6. Barbarian: D12.

For quick sessions without physical dice, the NexTools roller works perfectly.

Dice notation: how to read 2D6+3 and 4D8-1

Standard RPG notation: NdX+M

  • N: Number of dice
  • d: "die"
  • X: Sides per die
  • +M: Modifier added to total

Examples:

  • 2d6+3 = roll 2 six-sided, add 3. Range: 5-15.
  • 4d8-1 = roll 4 eight-sided, subtract 1. Range: 3-31.
  • 1d20+5 = typical level 3 attack roll.
  • 8d6 = Fireball (level 3). Range: 8-48, average 28.

Advantage and disadvantage: rolling 2D20

Advantage: Roll 2D20, keep the higher. Disadvantage: Roll 2D20, keep the lower.

Math impact:

  • Normal D20 average: 10.5
  • With advantage: ~13.8 (+3.3)
  • With disadvantage: ~7.2 (-3.3)

Probability of nat 20 goes from 5% to 9.75% with advantage (nearly double).

Virtual vs physical dice: pros and cons

Virtual (NexTools): Perfectly random, always available, multiple dice instantly, roll history, no lost dice.

Physical: Tactile experience (part of RPG ritual), no electricity needed, collectible (metal, resin, gemstone sets), some groups feel "it's not the same" rolling virtual.

Hybrid: Many groups use physical in person, virtual for online sessions (Discord, Roll20, VTT).

How digital dice generators work

Virtual dice generate random numbers in a range:

D20: Math.floor(Math.random() * 20) + 1

Is it truly random? Math.random() is pseudorandom. For games it's perfect. A physical die with manufacturing imperfections is LESS random than digital.

For cryptographic randomness, the NexTools password generator uses CSPRNG.

Domande frequenti

Are virtual dice as random as physical dice

More so. Physical dice have micro-imperfections causing biases. Digital generators produce perfectly uniform distributions.

What does rolling 2D6+3 mean

Roll 2 six-sided dice, sum results, add 3. If you roll 4 and 5: 4+5+3 = 12. Range: 5-15.

What is the probability of a natural 20 on a D20

Exactly 5% (1 in 20). With advantage: 9.75%. With disadvantage both being 1: 0.25%.

Can I roll multiple dice at once

Yes. NexTools allows selecting quantity (1-10) and type. Roll 4D6, 2D10, 8D6 with one click.

What is D100 and how is it used

D100 generates 1-100. Physically uses 2D10 (tens and units). Used for encounter tables, random events, and in systems like Call of Cthulhu.

What dice do I need to start playing D&D

Basic set: 1D4, 1D6, 1D8, 2D10 (for D100), 1D12, 1D20. Most RPG sets include these 7. Or use the NexTools virtual roller.
