Why tipping is different in every country

Tipping customs vary enormously worldwide:

  • USA: 18-22% mandatory (servers earn $2.13/hour base, rely on tips).
  • Japan: 0% — tipping is considered offensive (implies employer doesn't pay well).
  • Mexico: 10-15% expected at sit-down restaurants.
  • Spain: Not mandatory, rounding up or 5-10% appreciated.
  • Colombia: 10% included on the bill as "voluntary service" — you can accept or decline.

The difference is based on how service workers are paid. Where wages depend on tips (USA), tipping is practically mandatory. Where salaries include service (Europe, Japan), it's optional.

How to calculate tips: formula and examples

Formula: Tip = Bill × (percentage / 100)

Example 1 (USA): $85 bill, 20% tip: $85 × 0.20 = $17. Total: $102.

Example 2 (Mexico): $750 MXN, 15%: $750 × 0.15 = $112.50 MXN.

Split between people: $102 / 4 = $25.50 per person.

Mental trick: For 20%, calculate 10% (move decimal) and double. $85 → $8.50 × 2 = $17.

The NexTools tip calculator does all this instantly, with split option.

Tip on what amount: before or after tax

Before tax: Technically correct. Tip is for service, not taxes. $80 + $7 tax = $87. 20% on $80 = $16.

After tax: More common in practice (easier). 20% on $87 = $17.40.

Difference is minimal (~$1.40). Most people calculate on total including tax. In countries where tax is included in prices (Europe, Japan), this debate doesn't exist.

Tipping for delivery and ride-hailing apps

Delivery (Uber Eats, DoorDash): USA: $3-5 min or 15-20%. Europe: generally none.

Ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft): USA: 15-20% or $2-5 min. Europe/Asia: generally none.

Service apps (TaskRabbit): USA: 15-20%. Rest of world: not common.

When NOT to tip (and feel okay about it)

1. Japan, China, South Korea: Not customary and can be offensive.

2. Terrible service: In the USA, 10% communicates dissatisfaction. 0% is extreme but acceptable for abusive service.

3. No-tipping establishments: Some US restaurants eliminated tips and pay fair wages.

4. Service already included: Colombia's 10% "voluntary service" IS the tip. France's "service compris" means tip included.

5. Fast food / self-service: No tip if you serve yourself.

How to pay tips when traveling: cash, card, and conversion

Cash is king for tips: Goes directly to the server. Card tips may be delayed or reduced.

Card tipping: Available in USA/UK receipt line. Many other countries don't have card tip option — need cash.

Foreign currency: Carry local currency for tips. Few service workers accept dollars/euros outside tourist zones.

Use the NexTools currency converter to know your tip's local value.

The tipping debate: should tips exist

For: Incentivizes good service. US servers can earn $40-60K/year with tips.

Against: Consumer subsidizes employer. Creates income uncertainty. Tip quality correlates more with server's race/gender than service quality (Cornell studies). Enables discrimination.

2026 trend: Some US/UK restaurants adopting all-inclusive pricing with fair wages. This model is standard in Japan, Australia, and much of Europe.

Regardless of the debate, respect local customs. The NexTools tip calculator helps calculate the right amount anywhere.
